Mango (Mangifera indica)
Actually a native of India, this fruit arrived in Jamaica 1782 aboard the HMS Flora, one of Lord Rodney’s ships, which had captured the plants from a French ship on the high seas. Mangoes are used in a variety of ways in the Caribbean. Green mangoes are used in hot sauces and condiments, while ripe mangoes appear in desserts and candies and in drinks. The best varieties of mango are the Bombay, East Indian, St. Julian and Hayden.
